A Store Built on a Need, and a Mission to Help Save Lives in South Dorchester County
When my son, Elijah, and I started Elijah’s General Store, we did it because we saw a need in our community. Families living in this part of South Dorchester County were facing a simple but serious problem: there was no nearby grocery store, and residents could have to travel approximately 45 minutes to reach a store for groceries and everyday necessities.
Our community is considered a food desert, where access to fresh, healthy, and nutritious food is limited. We believed our neighbors deserved better. We wanted to create a place where people could get groceries, find basic necessities, and have a local business they could call their own community store.
That is how Elijah’s General Store came to be. It was about more than opening a business. It was about serving our neighbors and helping meet a need that had gone unmet for far too long.
When we purchased our home in Crapo, the property also came with the Crapo Post Office, the last post office still operating in our immediate community. This historic building is more than a place to send and receive mail. It is part of the identity and daily life of Crapo, connecting neighbors and serving generations of residents.
As we worked to serve our community through the store, we also recognized another important need: public safety.
We have an AED at Elijah’s General Store, because we understand that when someone suffers sudden cardiac arrest, every minute matters. An AED can help a bystander respond while waiting for emergency medical personnel to arrive.
But there is another concern for our community. The closest county medic unit may be approximately 35 minutes away from the Crapo area, even when the unit is at its station. That distance presents a serious challenge in a medical emergency, when immediate action can make the difference between life and death.
That is why I want to help get an AED installed.
