We are an organization who strives to create an environment for youth athletes to develop, excel, play and compete. Our goal is to provide lifelong core values, such as discipline, integrity, and leadership. We are currently asking for you to help our organization raise funds to obtain an AED with supplies to assist with life-saving measures in case an emergency situation happened at our facility.

Did you know the #1 cause of death in youth sports is due to sudden cardiac arrest? Many are due to undetected, underlying heart conditions, with 80% of those children showing no symptoms prior to experiencing a sudden cardiac arrest. While these numbers are scary enough, it is believed these are underestimates of actual occurrences, as some reports may not provide complete information.

Another scary cause of sudden cardiac arrest in young athletes, other than underlying heart conditions, is a rare, but often fatal, phenomenon called Commotio Cordis. This occurs when a person suffers a blow to the chest during a vulnerable period of the heart’s electrical cycle, resulting in a deadly heart rhythm known as ventricular fibrillation. Most documented cases occur between the ages of 10 and 18 years (however, it can occur at any age!) with approximately 10 to 20 cases of the phenomenon reported each year. The average survival rate of Commotio Cordis is only 24%.

The most crucial aspects of survival during these incidents are early recognition, early CPR, and early, rapid defibrillation. The best practice when it comes to sudden cardiac arrest is to be proactive rather than reactive. Should Venom Athletics ever have an athlete who suffers a sudden cardiac arrest, we want to be ready to respond effectively and increase the chances of survival.
